„Aus dem Magazin“ entstand 2016 im Rahmen des kuratorischen Projekts „Public Library“ von Katharina Hohmann und Christiane Ten Hövel für die Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (AGB) in Berlin.
In diesem Jahr verschwanden gewisse Schildchen, die im Lesesaal auf die Existenz des Magazins hinwiesen. Sie trugen Weiß auf Rot die Aufschrift „Weitere Bücher im Magazin!“. Der faszinierende Hinweis auf mehr Bücher verleitete dazu, sich mit dem Angebot nicht zufriedenzugeben, sondern weiter zu suchen.

Das Verschwinden der Schildchen geschah im Zuge einer Umstrukturierung des Magazins, dem Bücherlager der AGB. Als Raumzwilling mit gleichem Grundriss liegt es unter den öffentlichen Räumen der Bibliothek. Bislang war es inhaltlich analog zum Lesesaal nach Themengebieten aufgebaut. Ab jetzt werden Bücher und Medien dort nach dem Numerus Currens System eingestellt, das Bücherlager baut sich nach und nach um. Die analoge Ordnung wird in eine platzsparende Ordnung fortlaufender Zahlen umgewandelt, die außerdem besser zur digitalen Suche nach Büchern passt.
Die Arbeit befasst sich mit dieser Umstrukturierung des Magazins und basiert auf vielen, im Magazin zwischen zigtausenden von Büchern, verbrachten Wochen. Analog zu den verschwundenen Schildchen werden, Weiß auf Rot, kurze Botschaften formuliert und im Lesesaal angebracht. Sie lauten zum Beispiel: 2,50 m. Bücher über Joseph Beuys im Magazin! Mehr Hobbies der Achtziger im Magazin! Bücher über drei verworfene Diätprogramme im Magazin! 62 Kilo Kunstbücher über Frauen im Magazin!
Zeitgleich wird eine Kollektion von Büchern mit ausschließlich hellblauem Einband aus dem Magazin auf einem Wagen oben in der Lesehalle platziert. Die Mischung ist inhaltlich ähnlich zufällig wie die unten im Magazin durch die Sortierung nach fortlaufender Nummer entstehende. Man findet dort Lebenshilfe, Philosophie, Computeranleitungen, Trockengestecke und Politik nebeneinander eingeordnet.
Nach Ende des Projekts kommen alle blauen Bücher auf dem Wagen zusammen ins Magazin zurück und erhalten fortlaufende Nummern. So bleibt ein blauer Fleck im neu sortierten Magazin der Amerika Gedenk Bibliothek zurück.

That year, certain signs in the reading room disappeared, that had indicated the existence of the stack. In white on red they bore the inscription "More books in the magazine!" The promise of more books hidden away in the magazine could intrigue the visitors and simultaneously called on them not to be contend with what was given but to keep looking.

The disappearance of the signs happened during a restructuring of the magazine, AGB's storage facility. As a twin room with the same floor plan, it is located below the public rooms of the library. Previously, it was organized according to subject area, like the reading room. Now, reorganized, books and media are placed there according to the numerus currens system, and the book storage has been gradually restructured. The analog order is being converted into a space-saving order of consecutive numbers, which is also more adequate for a digital search for books.
The project deals with this restructuring of the stack and is based on many weeks’ worth of work spent among the tens of thousands of books. In analogy to the vanished signs, short messages are formulated in white on red and displayed in the reading room. They read, for example: 2.50 m. Books on Joseph Beuys in the magazine! More hobbies from the eighties in the magazine! Books on three discarded diet programs in the magazine! 62 kilos of art books about women in the magazine!
At the same time, a collection of books with exclusively light blue covers from the magazine was placed on a trolley upstairs in the reading hall. The mix of content was as random as the order downstairs in the stack, now sorted by consecutive numbers instead of by topic. You will find books on life advice, philosophy, computer manuals, dried flower bouquets and politics arranged side by side.
At the end of the project, all the blue books on the trolley were returned to the magazine together and given consecutive numbers. This leaves a blue spot in the newly sorted shelves in the stack of the Amerika Gedenkbibliothek.
